May 7, 2007: Two new compact digital still cameras will be added to Canon’s line-up in the next few weeks: the slimline Ixus 950IS and the PowerShot S5 IS.

Due for release in late May is the Ixus 950Is, which replaces the Ixus 800IS model and features a higher-resolution 8-megapixel CCD image sensor. The new model has the same Canon UA 4x optical zoom lens and lens-shift optical image stabiliser as its predecessor and supports the same shutter speed and aperture ranges. New features include the DiG!C III image processor, which provides Face Detect autofocus, auto exposure and auto flash facilities and in-camera red-eye correction. Sensitivity settings up to ISO 1600 are now provided.

The 2.5-inch PureColour LCD combines high resolution (230,000 pixels) with improved dust and scratch resistance and offers better performance in bright sunlight than previous displays. A real-image optical zoom viewfinder is also provided. The camera’s body design has been streamlined and it will be offered in a new ‘pearl silver’ finish for an RRP of $599.

Replacing the PowerShot S3 IS is the new 8-megapixel PowerShot S5 IS, which is scheduled for release in early June at an RRP of $699. The new model has the same 12x optical zoom lens and optical image stabiliser as its predecessor but adds the new functions associated with the DiG!C III image processor (see above). Body design has been improved to give the S5 IS a look and feel similar to an ultra-compact DSLR camera. The 2.0-inch LCD on the S3 IS model has been replaced by a 2.5-inch vari-angle LCD. An electronic viewfinder is provided.

New functions include an AF Continuous Shooting mode that supports fast focusing during continuous shooting. This is now available with all shooting modes. An Aquarium setting has been added to the Special Scene modes and the S5 IS has been fitted with a hot shoe, allowing it to be used with Canon Speedlite EX series flashes. Movie capture has been improved with the addition of a VGA LP mode that records 640 x 480 pixel frames at 30 frames/second until the memory card is full. Up to 4GB or one hour of recording is supported.
