Designed to appeal to photo enthusiasts, the new camera features an APS-C sized CMOS sensor with an effective resolution of 24.2 megapixels, which is partnered with a DIGIC 7   processor. It also has an integrated 3x optical zoom lens, which covers a focal length range equivalent to 24-72mm in 35mm format and has apertures ranging from f/2.8 at the widest angle to f/5.6 when zoomed in. The lens has been designed to match the sensor’s performance. The new camera is also dust- and splash resistant.

The G1X Mark III boasts a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 2,360,000 dot resolution and 100% frame coverage. It has a generous 22mm eyepoint and provides -3.0 to +1.0 of dioptric adjustment. The 3-inch vari-angle monitor has a resolution of 1,040,000 dots plus a 3:2 aspect ratio. Its electrostatic touch panel is protected by a reinforced glass cover and it covers the full sensor frame. Five levels of brightness adjustment are provided.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology has been ported across from Canon’s DSLR cameras and makes its first appearance in a compact, fixed-lens camera to provide fast and accurate focusing for shooting still pictures and movie clips. the G1X Mark III also comes with built-in 5-axis stabilisation plus Dual Sensing IS for four-stop shake correction. Other features include Auto Lighting Optimiser and Diffraction Correction settings which reduce the need to edit JPEG images and Touch and Drag Auto Focus  which lets the user select and adjust the focus of the lens by moving their thumb tip across the touch-screen monitor while looking through the EVF.

Despite having a 27%   larger sensor than the previous GIX Mark II, the new model is 14.8 mm thinner and 19% smaller, with dimensions of 115.0 x 77.9 x 51.4 mm and a weight of 399 grams.
