Canon is expanding its PowerShot G-series with the addition of the PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X this month.

Targeted at photo enthusiasts, the PowerShot G5 X features a high-resolution OLED EVF with 2,360,000 dots, positioned perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens to provide a DSLR-like shooting experience. It also comes with a 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor that has 1,040,000 dots and touch-screen controls. The built-in 4.2x zoom lens covers focal lengths equivalent to 24-100mm in 35mm format and has a fast maximum aperture range of f/1.8 to f/2.8 plus a 9-bladed iris diaphragm for attractive bokeh. On both models, the Lens Control Ring can be quickly assigned to control various photographic functions including aperture and shutter speed.

The PowerShot G5 X measures 112.4 x 76.4 x 44.2 mm and weighs approximately 377 grams with battery and memory card installed. It comes with a NB-13L battery, which is CIPA rated for approximately 201 shots/charge.
Both the PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X are equipped with a 12.8 x 9.6 mm (1-inch type) back-illuminated 20.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor and the latest DIGIC 6 processor. Both support Full HD movie recording at 50p, with full control over aperture, shutter speed and ISO and both include 5-axis Advanced Dynamic IS to ensure steady footage is recorded when running or moving. Both models also feature plenty of advanced creative modes and connectivity features, including an improved Star Mode for capturing nightscapes and star trails, Creative Shot filter effects and Remote Shooting via Wi-Fi. Built in Wi-Fi and Dynamic NFC connectivity makes it easy to transfer photos and movies to a smart device for sharing via social networks or storing in a cloud service.

The PowerShot G9 X is a slim, pocket-sized camera with no viewfinder. Built for spontaneity it has a 3x optical zoom lens with a zoom range equivalent to 28-84mm in 35mm format with maximum apertures ranging from f/2.0 to f/4.9. Up to 4x digital zoom is available. the 31-point AF system includes face detection and touch AF, using the monitor’s touch-screen controls. The 3-inch LCD monitor has a resolution of 1,040,000 dots and a 3:2 aspect ratio. It supports five levels of brightness adjustment.

Measuring 98 x 57.9 x 30.8 mm and weighing only 209 grams with battery and card installed, the PowerShot G9 X comes with a NB-13L battery that is CIPA rated for approximately 220 shots/charge. It will be offered in two colours: black and silver with brown leather trimming.
The PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X are raw-file capable and both cameras feature Canon’s signature red line indicating they are premium products. They will be available in stores from mid October 2015. Prices will be set at each dealer’s discretion.
