Featuring a dust- and drip-proof body, a 20.2-megapixel, 1.0-type (12.8 x 9.6 mm) back-illuminated CMOS sensor and 25x superzoom lens (24-600mm equivalent zoom range) with a maximum aperture range of f/2.8-f/5.6, it supports sensitivities up to ISO 12,800 and continuous shooting at up to 5.9 frames/second. The new camera is powered by Canon’s DIGIC 6 processor, which supports fast autofocusing and overall responsiveness plus an extended dynamic range for shooting in challenging conditions. The camera boasts a 3.2-inch tilting touch-screen monitor and offers DSLR-like levels of control when the optional high-resolution electronic viewfinder is attached via the built-in hot-shoe.

Full HD movies can be recorded with variable frame rates from 24p up to 60p, as well as manual control of the lens aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings. In addition to an internal microphone, the camera also features dedicated microphone and headphone jacks as well as a live HDMI output, so users can view recorded footage on external monitors as they shoot. Intelligent IS and the advanced 5-axis Dynamic IS mode keep recordings steady, even while the photographer is in motion, either walking down a city street, or travelling in high-speed transport.

Remote shooting via Wi-Fi and the new Camera Connect app let users control the camera’s key functions from a smart device, while Dynamic NFC simplifies image transfers to a Canon Connect Station or to asmart device. The Image Sync functionality lets users back up images to the cloud, including directly to Canon’s cloud storage service irista.

The PowerShot G3 X will be available mid-July 2015. Prices will be set at dealers’ discretion. (The US MSRP is quoted at $999.99.)
