February 2, 2005: Canon will replace its popular PowerShot A85 with a new model, the PowerShot A520, which features a 4-megapixel CCD sensor and 4x optical zoom lens.
The new model is due for release in March and is expected to retail for $499. It has the same body and lens as the PowerShot A510, which was unveiled on 20 January, and similar specifications. However, the higher-resolution sensor on the A520 allows it to support up to 3.6x digital zoom, compared with 3.2x for the A510. Its continuous shooting speed is also lower (1.9 fps compared to 2.3 fps) and the buffer memory can only hold eight high-resolution shots.
Like its sister model, the A520 offers 20 selectable shooting modes, including full auto, P, Tv, Av and M modes and 14 scene settings – plus movie capture at VGA, QVGA and QQVGA resolution with frame rates of 10 fps for VGA and 15 fps for QVGA and QQVGA. DPOF print ordering and direct printing via Canon’s Direct Print and PictBridge are also supported.
Both models are powered by two AA batteries and will accept rechargeable NiMH cells. Approximately 300 shots can be recorded with a fully-charged battery when the monitor is used for shot composition and up to 800 shots when the viewfinder is used. Product details will be posted on Canon’s website at www.canon.com.au.
