: Canon will release its new ‘flagship’ 3CCD XL2 digital video camera in October. The new model, which will replace the XL1s, is fitted with a new Canon L-Series professional video lens that incorporates a fluorite glass element and features 20x optical zoom. It also supports high-resolution 16:9 recording, making it ideal for professional applications such as film and television production, wedding videos and documentaries. The XL2 includes key features that made the XL1s popular, such as the XL interchangeable lens mount and open architecture that lets users install optional viewfinders, microphones and system accessories like the MA-300 Microphone Adaptor for additional professional use XLR fitted microphones. Its magnesium alloy chassis and integrated handle retains the light-weight versatility and high strength of the earlier model.

The three 1/3-inch CCD sensors have a resolution of 800,000 pixels, with higher resolution provided by a horizontal pixel shift system, where the green CCD is shifted the equivalent of half a pixel. This allows the XL2 allowst to film in high resolution 16:9 wide screen format, eliminating the “letterbox” view commonly found in consumer DVCs. In standard 4:3 format, the XL2 uses 550,000 pixels to achieve 540 lines horizontal resolution. A third generation LSI image processor controls internal signal processing, improving the S/N ratio, resolution and sensitivity reducing smear.
The XL2 comes with a two-inch shared LCD monitor/EVF structure with both latitudinal and longitudinal adjustment. The viewfinder flips up to give clear viewing access to the LCD monitor and fully supports the optional FU-1000 Monochrome CRT Viewfinder which also offers brightness, colour darkness, sharpness and contrast adjustment controls. A comprehensive suite of manual controls is provided and many functions can be saved as one of three Custom Presets. Customisable settings include colour matrix, gamma, knee, black, vertical, coring, sharpness, noise reduction, colour gain, hue and film grain. Additional controls cover master RGB, set-up level, master pedestal, skin tone detail and white balance. Shooting programs are available for full auto, auto, TV, AV, manual, spotlight and low light. The new Canon 20x zoom XL 5.4-108mm L IS lens includes a SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer which combines a gyro sensor with SuperRange processing that examines the image from the CCD, allowing low-frequency band compensation. Two independent ND filters allow shooting in extremely bright conditions. New accessories include the HC-3200 system case, which has been designed specifically to fit the XL2, with lens, standard microphone and viewfinder fitted. An advanced tripod adaptor, the TA-100, is also available. Product details can be found at www.canon.com.au. Phone 1800 021 167 for dealer information.
