: Two MiniDV camcorders will be released by Canon in July, featuring high-resolution 2.2 megapixel sensors and Canon’s DiG!C DV technology.
The new MVX20i boasts a 12x optical zoom lens, while the MVX25i has a 14x zoom. Both combine video and still image capture with a high degree of functionality and advanced features. DiG!C DV processing discriminates between video and still images and optimises colour processing according to whether an image is destined to be displayed on a TV screen or printed out. Both models sport a Print/Share button that makes it easy to print photos directly from a compatible printer and both include Canon’s Image Stabiliser technology.

The MVX20i and MVX25i also feature the original Canon video lens design. A double-sided aspherical element ensures optimal colour balance is achieved with low image distortion recorded. This element also ensures that consistent sharpness is maintained in all images captured. Advanced capture functions include a built-in flash, selectable focus points, auto exposure bracketing and continuous shooting for up to five frames/second. Both cameras are PictBridge compatible and both support high-resolution 16:9 wide-screen recording for high quality full screen playback on wide-screen televisions.
Other common features include a fully adjustable 2.5 inch colour LCD screen and colour viewfinder, 18 creative digital faders and digital effects and h an Advanced Accessory Shoe that accepts powered accessories such as video lights and microphones. The Night Mode setting allows colour images to be recorded of in almost complete darkness (0.9 lux) and a removable SD memory card is provided for storage and capture of still images and high quality Motion JPEG movies. USB and FireWire (IEEE1394) interfaces are provided for high speed transfer of video to a computer for non linear editing. Both cameras come with DV Messenger 2 software with USB streaming, which allows them to be used as webcams.

The MVX25i features a special Super Night Mode that can produce high-quality video recordings down to 0 lux. When the camera is operated in this mode, a white LED assist lamp provides additional illumination. It also includes a Manual Audio Level Control, which was previously found only on prosumer DVCs. Both models can accept a huge range of optional accessories, including lenses, microphones, lights and battery packs. They will go on sale in July 2004. Pricing has yet to be confirmed.
