Overnight, Blackmagic Design unveiled the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, a new handheld digital film camera with a full Super 35 size 6K HDR image sensor and an EF lens mount.

The latest camera builds on the design of the company’s popular Pocket Cinema Camera 4K but has a larger, 23.10 x 12.99 mm Super 35 sensor with 6K resolution, allowing higher image quality. The new camera claims to be capable of recording up to 13 stops of dynamic range and encompasses dual native ISO speeds from ISO 400 to ISO 3200 with extension to ISO 25,600 for HDR images. Shooting resolutions range from 6144 x 3456 (6K) at up to 50 fps to 1920 x 1080 (HD) at up to 120 fps, with the maximum sensor frame rate dependent on the resolution and codec selected. Recording formats include Blackmagic RAW and ProRes.
designed for a wide range of professional applications, the new camera can be used for independent film shooting as well as recording music videos, weddings, corporate videos and documentaries. Made from lightweight carbon fiber polycarbonate composite, the camera features a multifunction handgrip with all controls for recording, ISO, WB and shutter angle right at the user’s fingertips. A large 5-inch touchscreen makes it easy to frame shots, focus accurately and change camera settings as well as obtaining perfect focus at 4K and 6K resolutions. The camera also sports a removable battery door, 4 shock proof microphones, heavy duty lens mount and built in speaker.
Media options include built in SD/UHS‑II or CFast 2.0 recorders for Blackmagic RAW or ProRes recording as well as a USB‑C expansion port for recording externally to disks. The new camera comes with an active EF lens mount, built-in microphones, XLR input, full sized HDMI Type A connection, 3D LUT support, remote camera control via Bluetooth and a USB Type-C computer interface. Its battery can also be recharged via the USB-C interface. Bundled with the camera is a full DaVinci Resolve Studio for post production.
