June 9, 2010: A scheme that entitles visual artists to receive payment of a 5% royalty on certain resales of their works came into effect from today.
Developed by the Australian Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), it makes participating artists (including photographers) entitled to a 5% royalty on the sale price for certain resales of their work. This entitlement comes from the Resale Royalty Right for Visual Artists Act 2009 (the Act). The government has engaged Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) to collect resale royalties from buyers, sellers and art market professionals (such as commercial galleries and auction houses), and pay the royalties to artists and their beneficiaries.
To participate in the scheme, each artist must register with CAL. Online registrations are available at www.resaleroyalty.org.au from today. Information sheets are also available online and enquiries can be lodged on this website or by phoning 1800 066 844.
