The new passports, new photography exhibition, which opens at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on 15 November, is a celebration of the Gallery’s recent portrait photography acquisitions.
Brad Rimmer Sharon, Kellerberrin, Winter (from Silence) 2005. Colour photograph, 75 x 75 cm. State Art Collection, Art Gallery of Western Australia. Purchased through the TomorrowFund, Art Gallery of Western Australia Foundation, 2010.
Replacing the popular Richard Avedon People retrospective, new passports, new photography presents more than 100 works, most of which go on display for the first time.
The exhibition is a considered combination of works by Western Australian, Australian and International artists and includes several major newly acquired works by Australian Anne Zahalka.
Other photographers with work in the collection include Bindi Cole, Tony Albert, Darren Siwes, Brad Rimmer, Jackson Eaton and Fiona Foley.
Stylistically the photographs range from soft, personal imagery to strong and powerful statements; from the intimate to the deeply political.
Overall, the exhibition represents some of the ways identity is represented and self is shaped through this most accessible yet most challenging of contemporary art-forms.
The new passports, new photography exhibition opens at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on 15 November and runs until 8 February. Entry is free.
Guided tours will be held on Sundays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
