January 21, 2006: The latest version of Adobe’s Camera Raw file converter plug-in is now available for download from the company’s website.
Camera Raw, which converts raw files from a wide range of digital cameras into TIFF or JPEG format, is popular with photographers because it integrates seamlessly with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. By working with these “digital negatives,” photographers can achieve the results they want with greater artistic control and flexibility while still maintaining the original raw files. The new version includes support for the following cameras:
Canon: EOS 5D, EOS 1D Mark II N, EOS 20Da;
Fujifilm: FinePix E900, FinePix S5200/5600, FinePix S9000/9500;
Kodak: EasyShare P850, EasyShare P880;
Mamiya: ZD
Nikon: D200;
Olympus: E-500, SP-310, SP-350, SP-5000UZ;
Pentax: *ist DL, *ist DS2;
Sony: DSC-R1.
The latest version provides improvements to re-draw speeds at some zoom levels, plus fine-tuning of Bayer demosaicing algorithms that improve handling of fine detail. New warning dialogues appear when users attempt to cancel or reset the dialogue when there are changes to non-selected images. Users can also write ‘legacy’ caption metadata in IPTC format to TIFF, JPEG or PSD files that are saved from the plug-in, as well as the standard XMP format. Camera Raw 3.3 for Windows and Macintosh can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html.
