September 13, 2007: Australians are on track to spend a record five billion dollars on digital devices by the end of 2007, according to research figures released today.
The findings come from the latest Canon Digital Lifestyle Index, which is commissioned by Canon Australia and compiled by market researcher, GfK Marketing Services using information on sales figures (units and dollar value) provided by GfK’s retail audit panel. Sales figures for January-June of this year show we’ve already spent over two billion dollars, the report states, the highest figures ever for this period. The July-December retail period, which includes Christmas and the end-of-year sales, traditionally outperforms the first half by several hundred million dollars.
The product category with highest spending levels this year is flat panel television sets, which account for 52% of all spending on digital devices. In this category, LCD TVs have outstripped Plasmas in the race for sales dominance, making up 32% of total sales value. Digital still cameras are expected to account for around $293.7million of total CDLI revenues, although growth is slowing as most Australian households now own a digital still camera. DVD players are in a similar state.
Prices continue to fall across nearly all product categories, with plasma TVs showing the greatest decline, dropping by 18.9 %. Sales of came consoles grew by 42%, while multi-function devices experienced 17% growth.
