Funny thing about these photo challenges; no matter what concept we come up with, we never really manage to quite anticipate how our clever contributing photographers will respond. As we said when we posed the shadow challenge, our idea was to encourage the creation of dramatic film noir-style compositions. But, as you can see from the images on these pages creativity will not be so easily corralled.

The use of shadowed areas gives first-timer Kay Wilson’s ‘Eyeshadow’ a dramatic intensity that draws the viewer to the incongruous bejewelled eyelid of her subject. Such intriguing details give the beholder an incentive to muse about just what the story might be behind the picture.
As a token of appreciation, we’ll be sending Kay a prize package consisting of two 9-inch AKAI ADPF09XN Digital Photo Frames (RRP $149.95 each), one AKAI AD151X 1080P upscaling DVD player with SD and USB host (RRP $99.95) and one 7-inch AKAI ADPF07X Digital Photo Frame (RRP $79.95). That’s a total RRP value of around $500!

Our first runner-up was Karina Smith for her serendipitous shot of a most expressive and beautiful silhouette.

“I was staying with my family at a friends cabin in the beautiful Thora Valley. I jumped up early to catch the sun rise and when I got back noticed the beautiful shadows being cast on the bedroom wall.” Karina Smith
One of our most consistent contributors, Zorica Purlija submitted three strong contenders, but the slightly offbeat shadow study of a girl clinging to a tree limb was our favourite by a nose.

This challenge’s honorable mentions include Chris Woods for a simple but pleasingly er, voluptuous, lounge room wall and lamp; Amanda Bull for the little dog and its three shadows; and, Andy Parkee’s long shadowed Central Station.
