From the Man in the Moon to pictures of Elvis discerned in burnt toast, seeing faces in the random patterns of the world around us seems to be a natural by-product of being human.

WINNER:  Sandman by Dave Camilleri.
Sunrise under the jetty at Coffs Harbour. I made this photo when the sand formed the shape of a face.

Our Face in the Cloud competition sought to harness the creative powers of our Photo Challengers to this end and, as usual, the responsive was creative and surprising.

Winner Dave Camilleri’s image of a face in the sand wasn’t instantly obvious to all viewers on first exposure, but once you stood back from the image we found that the ‘visage’ popped out.

Dave has won a versatile, comfortable  Lowepro ProTactic 450 AW  camera bag.

FIRST RUNNER-UP: Smile, by Susan Shanta.

Susan Shanta managed to spot a cheerful little smile on the edge of a leaf, earning herself the first runner-up guernsey. And she picked up an honorable mention for a happy face formed of daisies.

SECOND RUNNER-UP: Gang of Three, by Andy Parkee.
These three planks look like they are part of a rough ‘n’ tumble gang ““ worse for wear from a few tough street battles.

Second runner-up Andy Parkee spotted three grizzled types in a row of fence pallings and then he looked down and discovered a serene face in a paver.

HONOURABLE MENTION:  Untitled, by Andy Parkee.
I came across this ‘face’ in the city. I love the calm, quiet, ‘zen-like’ quality. I particularly like the small leaf for the mouth”¦ or is it nose?
