Our ‘Seeing Red’ Challengers saw red in places expected and unexpected.
And very much in the latter category was Naomi Kevin’s bunch of red balloons bobbing gaily in the wake of a passing bicyclist. As always, it was a very strong field, but for some reason that cheerfully frivolous display caught our fancy and we decided to give the nod – and the prize of a Lowepro Pro Roller Lite 250 AW to Naomi.
As the racing callers like to say, you could’ve thrown a blanket over the runners’ up. Leading the charge this time was the ever-reliable Robert Zappia who apparently takes his camera along even when he goes to the movies. Keen-eyed erstwhile beachcomber Norman Shapro found just the right rock, and Susan Shanta deployed her macro lens to excellent effect in her study of a red, red rose. John Tarlinton, Amanda Bull and Andy Parkee were hard on the heels of the front runners, proving once again what a depth of talent there is among our keen Photo Challengers.

Untitled by Naomi Kevin
FIRST RUNNER-UP
‘Comfy Red’ by Robert Zappia
Taken in Sydney’s State Theatre during the recent Sydney Open architecture open day. It was quite dark in the theatre so I had to use my tripod and a slightly higher ISO so that I didn’t have to use an excessively slow shutter speed. I used the tilt function on my 24mm TS-E lens to maximise the depth of field. Composing the scene was a bit of a challenge but I managed to achieve some nice curved elements. Processed with Adobe Camera RAW, and some additional adjustments and cropping in Photoshop.
