The Emporium is a multi-level shopping mall in Melbourne CBD. This architectural image has lines, symmetry and contrast which are presented as a semi-abstract image.

Don’s response

It’s easy to see why photographer Lex Rudd was attracted to this striking interior. His composition is strong and the gentleman is a nice touch too.

While it certainly stands on its own as an image, it would be interesting to see what would happen were it cropped more tightly so as to make the visual story about the relationship between the curved features.

Imagine if the bottom curve was centred, and the left hand side cropped from just before the left-most plate glass support behind the man.

It looks like one of those locations worth returning to on multiple occasions with one’s camera.
