We know from photographer Deve Mahesan that Tatiana is the victim of bullying but I wonder if we viewers didn’t know this fact, would our reactions be different? The quiet intensity of her gaze is at once direct and yet strangely blank at the same time. The open space to her left creates for me a slight visual tension that I think makes this a better picture than had it simply been a standard, tightly-cropped head and shoulders portrait.
