Don’s response
Black and white photography is always about light and shade and form. Had he left this image in the original colour form, Mike’s quietly mysterious composition would likely have been much less interesting. Freed from the distractions colour, we can appreciate the delicate modelling of the light on the ambiguous central figure. Maybe it’s the smudgy, dark palette and the odd abstract shape of the Opera House detail, but this very much put me in mind of something from a 1930s Hitchcock movie. Terrific stuff.
