I followed this Whistling Kite around the edge of a lake as it was foraging for nest supplies and captured this moment as it crossed its legs, appearing to be focused on its shadow.

Photographer Ron Watton’s patience was rewarded with an opportunity to capture an interesting, if slightly odd looking behaviour.
Thanks to the just-so plane of focus, we can see all beautiful detail of the Kite’s delicately coloured plumage.
The anthropomorphic dance step pose and the dramatic shadow lift the picture into the second-look realm.
