Don’s response
This is one of those occasions when things not going to plan turned out to very well indeed. With their converging lines and interesting details, piers are a perennial photographic favourite. However, to come away with an interesting picture of such a common subject is a real challenge.
Happily thanks to a little slippage in the Hill household scheduling, Athol ended up with a nicely atmospheric shot. The foggy conditions and late hour have pared away any distracting detail by creating a natural vignette effect which strongly reinforces the convergence. I like the halos around the lights and how the exposure is just enough to make the foreground texture visible.
