Don’s response

We photographers just love piers. The converging lines, the weathered timber and the restless sea are pretty much a walk-up start for an emphatic and visually interesting composition.

Rebecca Fairley’s picture places the emphasis firmly on the symmetrical nature of its subject. Her exposure is nicely balanced, as is the depth of focus and the atmosphere of a breezy sunny afternoon is well conveyed.

We can’t know if she tried any other angles, but it occurs to me that maybe moving the camera down to waist or even knee height might have resulted in an equally attractive, if somewhat less conventional result.
