The Namib Desert has rainfall of about 8mm per year. It had rained 24 hours before we arrived, but the water had disappeared and the mud cracking was well under way.

Photographer Lex Rudd has used his wide-angle lens’s depth of field to strong effect here. The detail of the tack sharp foreground anchors the viewer in this harsh landscape.

I can easily imagine this picture appearing as an illustration in a feature on water scarcity because it so forcefully conveys a sense of aridity.
