It’s not clear to me just how photographer David Jacobs managed to get this lighting effect. However it may have come about, the result is a marvelous one.
The glow (a tablet computer?) from the mystery light source is sufficiently strong that David was able to let the shadows drop into pure black. That in turn gives the subject a three dimensional quality as its detail emerges from the background.
