Whilst on holidays in The Netherlands I photographed the Texel lighthouse. For this picture I put the camera on a tripod and used a 5 minute exposure to capture trails from the headlights of the few cars travelling to and from the lighthouse.

Perhaps it’s my fondness for moody skies and monochrome, but I do like Chris Hens’ Lighthouse 3 for the way the blurred lines formed by the passing cars’ headlights lead us right up to the base of the aforementioned structure. I like as well the way Chris’s image is very low key but not so dark that we’re left with mere silhouettes. While some of that detail might be hard to hold in a print, when viewed electronically there is good access to detail and a sense of volume in the shadow areas.
