Don’s response

On his way out after a visit to the NGA, photographer Phil Berry noticed a young patron in very relaxed mode. I suspect that, like many viewers, my immediate response was to smile and chuckle.

But I soon realised that quick-grab though the shot may have been, it is really quite beautifully balanced.

There’s a kind of formality to the composition that encourages the eye to rest in the space it creates, and to feel something of its central subject’s almost meditative calm.
