Kilchurn Castle

An imposing site on the banks of Loch Awe in the West Highlands of Scotland.
This was my first visit to this ruin and was very pleased the weather had turned to allow for a very dramatic scene, with the low angry clouds and impressive mountains in the background.
Don’s response
Weather is one of the great challenges for travelling photographers.
Few of us have the luxury of waiting around more than a few hours for conditions to improve, so when the weather gods smile upon us as they did when photographer David Scott fetched up at Loch Awe, we can only be grateful.
I like David’s choice of a slow shutter speed to render the water’s surface with just the right amount of blur to subtly draw our eye into the picture.
The dark sky and blackened ruins are, visually speaking, made for each other.
I think the composition achieves a satisfactory balance between castle and landscape, but I also had fun reframing the image in my mind so that that slightly distracting pole on the left was just cropped out…
