Field of Stars

By Steve Genesin

Olympus EM-1 Mark 11; Olympus Pro 7-14 mm; 15s; ISO 500 for the foreground; tripod.

I was trying a technique of focus stacking, ie focus on the stars and then focus on the old tractor in the foreground, along with some light painting. The images were taken into Photoshop for some blending and post production. I was quite pleased with the final result.

Don’s response

It’s easy to see why photographer Steve Genesin is happy with this dramatic composition.

Without his light painting efforts, the old tractor in the foreground would be nothing more than an ambiguous silhouette.

Yes the lighting is, strictly speaking, unnatural, but I think it makes this more than just another starry sky picture.

The juxtaposition of the rusting machine under the vast and timeless firmament glowing above it tells a more interesting story.
