This little family group came trotting down to the waterhole at Etosha in Namibia, raising up quite a bit of dust on the little track in between the rocks.

Although this was taken fortuitously in a split second, the dust separates the elephants from the background.

The gaze from the elephant in the front anchors the eye, and the random giraffe in the background was an interesting bonus.

Don’s response

There is much to enjoy in Matt Oliver’s elephant family portrait.

The line of figures has a kind of dynamism that it might well have lacked had the camera been positioned at right angles.

Instead, we see each of these beautiful creatures at something approaching a three-quarter view which both gives a sense of movement and conveys something of their individual personalities.
