Don’s response
Although rendered in black and white, photographer Phillip Livingstone’s portrait of Ella Rose instantly reminded me of a Pre-Raphaelite painting.
Ella’s distant, contemplative gaze, her luxuriant mane and the lost-in-thought gesture of her hands would not have been out of place in that genre.
The gritty backdrop however is very 21st century and while I think the graffiti and concrete don’t work against the subject, the picture would be stronger if there was more separation between the background shadow values (particularly on the left) and Ella’s abundant locks.
