Taken at Sossusvlei, Namibia. The late afternoon light was quite hazy but allowed an even, diffused light onto the dune and the ripples in the foreground sand to stand out.
The crest of the dune led the eye upwards but the tree with its dark green foliage anchored the view.
Don’s response
What photographer wouldn’t love to have been in Matt Oliver’s shoes? The curve of the dune ridge line has a geometric purity that is the heart of this picture.
And I agree too that the tree in all its dendritic glory provides a sort of anchoring contrast in texture and colour to the smooth, immaculate sweep of the dune.
I’d like to see what Matt might have done had he sought to dramatize the relationship between the tree and dunes by coming in closer to reduce the amount of sky and to crop out some of the less interesting content on the left.
