Taken while on a European river cruise during Autumn. The light and colours were amazing. You could not but help clicking the shutter button numerous times.

To me this photo has a sense of mystery about it – what lies beyond those trees?

Leon Chistiakoff’s Darkness Beyond has the sort of quiet intensity that is the mark of a strong landscape image.

The contrast between the warmth, texture and volume of the autumnal yellow foliage and the cool, reserved silence of the pine forest is at the heart of the visual story.

It is a picture that rewards close attention too. There is something slightly mysterious about the darkness between the straight lines of the bare trunks and I love their interaction with lighter foliage in the upper left quadrant.

This would make a beautiful large print, but I suspect it might be equally beguiling at say 10cm on the longest side.
