My hunch is that most people looking at this would be bemused by photographer Michael Payne’s choice of apparent subject.
I say ‘apparent’ because while it looks at first glance like a rather static picture of a petrol station, I think there’s more going on.
For me the interest is in the relationship between the clean, almost sterile manmade object and the austere, snowy landscape and quietly dramatic sky in the background.
