By Gary Longden.
This photo is of a pair of red tailed black cockatoos near Bundaberg. The standout appearance of these graceful birds against a cloudless clear blue sky was striking. The challenge was to capture the movement of the birds to emphasise the spectacular red show feathers under the tail of the male birds.

Don’s response

Gary Longden’s picture of two Black Cockatoos at once captures the joy and the frustrations of BIF (Birds In Flight) photography.

On the one hand the subjects are in focus and displaying their plumage beautifully. But, on the other hand, they’re too far apart, their placement is awkward and, above all, they’re not filling much of the frame.

Apart from being luckier, Gary might have been better focussing in as tightly as possible on one of the pair rather than trying to get both in the shot.
