Batu Caves Monkeys

By Matt Woodcock

Pentax KP; 100mm macro lens

I primarily like nature photography so find the macro lens pretty much stays on my camera all the time.

The Batu Caves monkeys were in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I got very lucky with the timing and the lighting in the cave.

Don’s response

Photographer Matt Woodcock took full advantage of the almost cinematic lighting in this quietly intense family portrait.

He doesn’t mention the aperture, but the comparatively shallow depth of field suggests it was at or near wide open. And that really helps to separate the precisely focused subjects from the somewhat busy background.

While I think it works quite well as framed, cropping it to a portrait aspect ratio would pare away the extraneous background and shift the balance resolutely to the central figures.
