Canon PowerShot G10
Canon's new PowerShot G10 replaces last year's popular G9 model, providing some significant improvements in body design, functionality - and also performance. The latter is surprising since Canon has boosted the new model's effective resolution to 14.7 megapixels, up from 12.1 megapixels (which was already too high) on the G9. (Initially, we would have preferred a larger sensor with only 10 megapixels - but read on!) ... [more]
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28
Replacing the popular FZ18 model in Panasonic's long-zoom line-up, the new DMC-FZ28 model offers higher resolution (10.1 megapixels vs 8 megapixels) for the same RRP. Its 18x zoom lens covers a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 27-486mm (compared with 28-504mm on the FZ18). This range can be almost doubled with the Extra Optical Zoom function, which reduces output resolution to 3 megapixels. ... [more]
Nikon Coolpix P6000
Replacing the P5100 model as flagship of Nikon's compact digicam line-up, the Coolpix P6000 features a slightly larger, 13.5-megapixel CCD sensor, EXPEED processing and 4x Zoom-Nikkor lens. Like its predecessor, it provides the P, A, S and M shooting modes enthusiast photographers require. However, the P6000 adds raw file capture and some useful functions like geo-tagging, a built-in Ethernet connection, wireless flash and user customisation.  ... [more]
Olympus SP-565 UZ
Olympus's SP-565 UZ incorporates many of the features of the flagship model of the long-zoom range, the SP-570 UZ, in a cheaper, more compact body. It has the same 10-megapixel sensor and 20x optical zoom lens plus the same TruePic III image processor. Yet it weighs 72 grams less and is $100 cheaper than the SP-570 UZ. Its LCD monitor is also slightly smaller but has the same resolution as the flagship model.  ... [more]
Nikon Coolpix S710
The S710 is the flagship model in Nikon's S (for Stylish) range of Coolpix cameras. Featuring a 14.5-megapixel CCD sensor and 3.6x optical zoom lens with VR lens-shift stabilisation, it provides a useful range of user-adjustable controls in a compact, solidly-built body. Image processing is based on Nikon's EXPEED chip, which promises fast response times and adds some potentially useful automated functions.  ... [more]
Canon PowerShot SX110 IS
Replacing the PowerShot SX100 IS the new 9-megapixel PowerShot SX110 IS combines increased resolution and a larger, higher-resolution LCD with a more compact body, which is available in silver or black. Like its predecessor, the SX110 IS is designed for family snapshooters but retains the suite of manual controls that is truncated in the latest A-series PowerShots (like the A2000IS).  ... [more]
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3
Successor to the popular DMC-LX2 model, the Panasonic DMC-LX3 represents a significant upgrade to its predecessor. Panasonic claims to have improved 'every component' to deliver a camera that will appeal to DSLR photographers who want a capable compact camera with all the necessary features and functions as a complement to their main camera. ... [more]
Nikon Coolpix P80
Nikon's Coolpix P80 combines a 10-megapixel sensor with an 18x 'superzoom' lens that offers wide-angle shooting at the equivalent of 27mm in 35mm format. The overall zoom range (which extends to the equivalent of 486mm) provides a useful span of focal lengths with relatively wide maximum apertures. The camera body is compact and well designed with a comfortable rubber-coated grip and thumb rest. Weighing just over 390 grams with battery and card, it provides a useful suite of manual controls.  ... [more]
