Sony Unveils Waterproof Cyber-shot TX5

February 18, 2010: Sony has released details of its first waterproof digicam, the Cyber-shot TX5, which is due to go on sale locally in April at an RRP of $599.

Waterproof to three metres and able to withstand a drop of 1.5 metres, the new TX5 can operate in freezing conditions down to -10 degrees C. At just 17.7mm thick, it's claimed as the world's thinnest and smallest waterproof digital still camera and comes in silver, pink, black and red. The TX5 features a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS Sensor with an effective resolution of 10.2 megapixels, Sony's BIONZ image processor and a Carl Zeiss lens with 4x optical zoom and 25mm equivalent wide angle.

The new camera also comes with Sony's iSweep Panorama mode, which has been enhanced with the addition of face and motion detection to intelligently adjust panorama stitching to cope with subject movements. It also offers continuous shooting at 10 frames/second at full 10.2-megapixel resolution. The back-illuminated sensor doubles the sensor's sensitivity, improving low-light performance. A new Backlight Correction HDR mode can counteract high subject contrast by taking two pictures at different settings and processing the best elements of both into a single image.

The enhanced touchscreen interface makes the TX5 easy to operate. Touch focusing is available both above and under water.  Touch an icon on the widescreen LCD and the camera switches instantly to 720p HD movie shooting mode, regardless of your current camera settings. Flick a fingertip to scroll though your images or drag frequently used functions onto the main menu screen for easy access.
