January 21, 2009: Sigma has released details of a new extended-range general-purpose lens with hybrid image stabilisation that complements the in-body stabilisation systems from Pentax and Sony.
The new DC lens is designed for use with cameras that have 'APS-C' sized sensors and is the first optically stabilized lens available for Sony and Pentax digital cameras. The lens consists of 18 elements in 14 groups, with four Special Low Dispersion glass elements and three Aspherical lens elements to counteract common aberrations. It has a minimum aperture of f/22 and seven diaphragm blades to provide a circular aperture. A built-in HSM (Hypersonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full time manual focusing capability. Super multi coating minimises flare and ghosting.
With a diameter of 79 mm and length of 101 mm, the new lens weighs only 630 grams. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45 cm at all focal lengths and a maximum magnification of 1:3.4 reproduction ratio, making it ideal for close-up photography. Internal focusing enables use of angle-critical filters. It will be offered with mounts for Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony DSLR bodies. It is supplied with a petal-shaped lens hood.
