February 12, 2009: Nikon has released details of its first DX-format-specific prime lens, the AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G, which offers a picture angle equivalent 52.5mm in 35mm format.
The first single-focal-length lens with a normal picture angle developed exclusively for Nikon's DX format, its compact size, light weight and affordable price will make this lens attractive to owners of small SLR cameras. Its large maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes this lens valuable for hand-held shooting in dimly-lit situations and provides excellent facilities for differential focusing with portrait and close-up subjects. The built-in Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures fast, quiet autofocus, even with SLR models that do not have a built-in motor, such as the D40 series and D60.
Constructed from eight elements in six groups and including one aspherical element, the new lens has a seven-bladed aperture diaphragm that closes to a circular aperture. Closest focusing distance is 30 cm and the minimum aperture is f/22. The lens is 52.5 mm long with a diameter of 70mm and weighs only 200 grams. It accepts 52mm filers. It is supplied with end caps, a bayonet hood (HB-46) and flexible pouch (CL-0913).
