July 27, 2009: Canon Australia has announced a new Hybrid Image Stabiliser (IS), the world's first optical image stabilisation technology that compensates for both angle camera shake and shift camera shake.
The new Hybrid IS technology uses the standard angular velocity sensor found in all previous optical image stabiliser mechanisms to detect the extent of angle-based shaking. But it also adds a new acceleration sensor that determines the amount of shift-based camera shake. A newly developed algorithm combines the information from the two sensors to make optimal adjustments, thereby dramatically reducing the effects of camera shake during shooting. It is particularly effective for macro shooting, where shift-based shaking, which occurs when a camera moves parallel to the imaging scene, is more pronounced.
The new technology will be featured in an interchangeable single lens reflex (SLR) camera lens planned for commercial release before the end of 2009. This introduction will come as Canon celebrates the 50th anniversary of the sale of Canon's first single-lens reflex camera in 1959.
