June 8, 2010: The AFP Foundation is calling for entries to its second international photography contest, which is run in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The contest aims to highlight the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight human development targets that the world's governments adopted in 2001 and pledged to achieve by 2015. These goals are:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
- Achieve universal primary education.
- Promote gender equality and empower women.
- Reduce child mortally.
- Improve maternal health.
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
- Ensure environmentally sustainability.
- Develop a Global Partnership for Development.
Through the photo contest this year, UNDP hopes to bring much needed attention to the quickly approaching deadline for achieving the MDGs in order to motivate people and governments in developed and developing countries to redouble their efforts in the fight against extreme poverty. At a time when the world's attention will be focused on these issues, the winning photos will put a human face on the MDGs.
The contest is open to any amateur or professional photographer and there is no entry fee. Photographers can submit multiple entries, However, for each entry, you must select only ONE of the eight Millennium Development Goals and submit a maximum of three photos in the Goal that you selected. Ideally, at least one photo should be a vertical shot for purposes of turning it into a poster.
