August 6, 2010: The Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) will join forces with Arts Freedom Australia (AFA) to stage a public rally protesting against increasing restrictions on commercial and non-commercial projects (including photography and filming) in public spaces.
Such restrictions include imposed fees and elaborate bureaucratic application processes. Photographers and film-makers - both amateur and professional - being increasingly accosted by over-vigilant security guards and, sometimes, even private individuals. It seems the general paranoia surrounding the taking of images in public places is on the increase, particularly when it comes to photographing children. Instances have even been reported of parents being stopped from photographing their own children playing sports. Wedding photographers have also been ‘bailed up' when taking photographs of couples in public areas.
The rally will taken place near Campbell Cove in Sydney Harbour on Sunday, 29 August, 2010 between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. Photographers are encouraged to turn up with tripods and cameras to protest against the treatment received when photographing in a public domain.
