WINNER 2005

Title: Sand in my face
Photographer: Wayne Harlech-Jones
Location: Long Reef Beach, Sydney
Date: December 2004
Camera: Canon G2
The inaugural Photo Review Portrait Prize competition attracted more than 200 entries. We were gratified at the number of images, but what really impressed us was the uniformly high standard of the work submitted. Our instinct that Photo Review readers were a talented group of people was borne out in unequivocal fashion! Reducing the field to a manageable number of entrants for our final round of judging was not easy, but deciding the winner from among those select images was more difficult still.
In the end, the majority decision came down in favour of Wayne Harlech-Jones's 'Sand in my Face'. This is one of those photographs that leaves an after-image in the viewer's mind. It isn't just the tactility of the sand and the fine hairs across the subject's face, although those are important. It isn't the striking contrast of the subject's pale, delicate skin and those green eyes either... and it isn't just the subtle expression ever so faintly playing on her face... but taken together, this image has an 'X' factor that we think puts it over the line in what is a very strong field.
Thank you again to all who participated. We were dazzled and we're already looking forward to next year's competition.
