My, what a shy bunch our usual crowd of keen Photo Challengers are! Even though the conditions were as easy as they could possibly be - ie, to look into your own lens - it seems that we modern photographers are rather wary of being our own subjects. Still, although we received a comparative handful of entries for Photo Challenge 35, the standard was, as usual, pleasingly high.
We found ourselves having to choose our winner from two particularly strong entries sent in respectively by Photo Challenge stalwarts Zorica Purlija and Roz Krugle. In the final analysis, the nod went to Zorica Purlija because we felt her direct engagement with the camera made for the most compelling image. There is a kind of rawness and ambiguity that we think engages the viewer on an emotional level.
Roz Krugle may have gone for mystery over disclosure, but thanks to her sure sense of composition, the image is strong enough to hold the viewer's interest. The shallow depth of field and artful employment of the Rule of Thirds makes this a very strong runner up.
We also thought Shirley Treasure's self-portrait in beautiful warm-toned black and white was worthy of an honourable mention.
