Photo Challenge 32: The Egg
The idea for this photo challenge came from photographer R. Ian Lloyd (see 'Be Prepared' in Photo Review 34). One of the very first challenges he faced as a young photography student was how to come up with a good picture of a humble egg. The difficulty factor of this apparently simple exercise was obviously pretty high, because we received fewer entries than usual. However, it was good to see that a hardy band of our most stalwart Photo Review Challenge lenspersons were undeterred by the complexity of rendering simplicity. It was a competitive group as you can see, but in the end we gave the nod to Craig Mitchell for seeing the shape of an egg in a most unexpected place.

Winner: Craig Mitchell

Said Craig, 'This is my wife's belly, pregnant with twins. Taken at sunrise in the swimming pool.' Craig used a Pentax K10D and converted the picture to mono with Photoshop.

As our winner, Craig will receive a copy of photographer Louise Mann's book The Joy of Light.

Last issue's Photo Challenge winner, Chris Hens, has come up with another nicely realised and beautifully simple image. According to Chris, in the course of shooting this challenge, he ate more eggs than he's consumed in a long time. Thanks for risking your cholesterol levels on our behalf, Chris.

First runner-up: Chris Hens

Roz Krugle submitted a number of images this time around, including one entitled 'Eggs-actitude'. Roz elucidates, 'being a device whose primary function is to measure a set amount of time; this egg timer has been titled eggs-actitude ... a play on the word exactitude, meaning the quality of being exact, preciseness and accuracy.'

Second runner-up: Roz Krugle for Eggs-actitude

Mark Sherbourne is our third runner-up for his curiously engaging study of an egg resting in, well, we're not quite sure what... but we liked the regal bearing imparted to the egg by its throne-like holder.

Third runner-up: Mark Sherborne
